They are a strong people making a living in a harsh land, and those who have undertaken magical studies often work with their military for the sake of support and magical development. Furthermore, the Zoom point closest to their most precious academic resource is still a fair trek away, and there are a not insignificant number of monsters that roam the area. It was so when I was a student there, and I am certain that circumstances are even worse at present.
